A DIRECTOR for the Twilight saga’s fourth film, Breaking Dawn, has not yet been named.
But a number of choices are being mentioned online as the fans speculate on who will bring the final book to life on the big screen.
So let’s take a look at the unofficial shortlist as put forward by the Twilight community.
First though, we need to rule out the existing filmmakers from the franchise.
And we can do that with the help of Ashley Greene, who plays vampire Alice Cullen (pictured), sister of Robert Pattinson’s character Edward.
Ashley, 22, was asked by E! Online if there would any repeat directors for the fourth instalment, which starts filming in spring 2010.
She said: “I don’t think so. [Eclipse director] David [Slade] and [New Moon director] Chris [Weitz] will both be busy in post-production, and Catherine [Hardwicke] will be doing Hamlet.”
That sounds like a logical answer – and it leaves the director’s chair empty for the final film. So who should take on the fourth instalment?
Some have mentioned Guillermo del Toro, who has a strong interest in fantasy horror and made the vampire film Cronos as well as Pan’s Labyrinth and the two Hellboy movies. He’s far too tied up with the two films of The Hobbit, not to mention a host of other film projects on his plate.
Others have suggested Peter Jackson, who is best known for the Lord of the Rings trilogy and whose films have amazing creature effects, such as Gollum and Kong. But he’s an executive producer on Del Toro’s Hobbit and is wrapped up with that.
Another name put forward is Danny Boyle, director of the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire. Some think he is an unlikely choice for the franchise but he directed sci-fi horror flick 28 Days Later, assisted on its sequel 28 Weeks Later and helmed the sci-fi space drama Sunshine.
Then there’s Juan Antonio Bayona (pictured right), who made the excellent Spanish-subtitled horror movie The Orphanage, which was co-produced by Del Toro. Bayona was at one point reported to be directing Eclipse before David Slade was officially announced. He’d be a great choice but he won’t be available because in spring next year he starts filming Hater, an adaptation of David Moody’s 2006 thriller novel about an epidemic of violence.
Another possibility could be Drew Barrymore, who has turned her hand to directing with upcoming comedy film Whip It! and was rumoured to be under consideration for taking the reins on Eclipse.
Also suggested is Stephen Norrington who directed the first Blade movie and is attached to a new big-screen version of The Crow as well as a new Blade prequel trilogy.
Other options could be one of the directors of the Harry Potter films. A solid choice would be Alfonso Cuaron who took on the third Potter movie, as well as directing Children of Men and being a producer on Del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth.
Those are among the names put forward by fans online. But there are many other possibilities out there.
